The Knock of Something Ancient: My First Real Glimpse of a Woodpecker

Updated: May 4

I’m 40 years old and until recently, I had never seen a woodpecker.

I’d heard them. That rhythmic tapping echoing through Georgia’s woods, like the forest had a secret heartbeat. Always distant, always hidden. I’d pause, scan the trees, and wonder, Who’s out there knocking like that? What are they trying to say?

But now, after four decades of listening, I’ve seen one! Not once, but twice. And it was one of the most awe-inspiring things I’ve ever witnessed.

🔴 A Crown of Crimson

This wasn’t just any woodpecker. This one wore a head of deep, vibrant red, like it had been dipped in sunset and crowned by the forest itself. Its sleek black back, stark white belly, and bold wing patches made it look like it was dressed for something important, like a messenger sent by the trees.

I stood there, completely still. It wasn’t just a sighting. It was a moment, the kind you feel in your chest more than your eyes.

It felt like a secret had been revealed.

🧬 A Bird from Another Time

The Red-headed Woodpecker (Melanerpes erythrocephalus) is native to the eastern U.S., including right here in Georgia. It’s a bird with ancient roots, a living echo from a time long before humans ever walked these woods.

These birds are built to dig deep. Their skulls can withstand thousands of hits a day. Their tongues are long, barbed, and sticky — and designed to reach into hidden places and pull out nourishment.

They don't sing. They drum. It’s communication. Territory. Mating. Rhythm. Life.

🔮 A Personal Wake-Up Call

Seeing this bird; this red-crowned forest drummer, felt personal.

It was as if nature tapped me on the shoulder and said, “You’re ready now.”

Ready to tune in.

Ready to notice the quiet things.

Ready to peel back the surface and discover what’s been beneath it all along.

For 40 years, I only heard the call.

Now, I’ve seen the messenger.

And it was perfect.

💫 A Message from the Trees

So here’s to the Red-headed Woodpecker..... bold, beautiful, and utterly unapologetic. Thank you for showing yourself.

For breaking the silence.

For reminding me that life’s rhythms are always playing, even when we can’t see the drummer.

If you’ve only heard life calling, keep listening. One day, you’ll see it too. And when you do, you’ll know exactly what I mean.
