Sleeping on the Floor: A Life-Changing Decision
My husband and I were on the hunt for a brand-new mattress. We were tired of waking up in pain, tossing and turning all night, and feeling just as exhausted in the morning as we did before going to bed. It felt like we hadn’t slept at all. Something had to change.
One day, I came across a video of a man explaining how he and his wife had ditched their bed and started sleeping on the floor, just like our ancestors did. He described the many benefits they had gained from it—better posture, less pain, more energy. It struck a chord with me. Could the solution be as simple as removing the bed entirely?
We decided to give it a shot, saving the money we would have spent on another mattress. That was over six months ago, and we have never felt better.
The Benefits We Experienced
The results were incredible. We noticed:
More Energy – We wake up feeling truly rested, no longer groggy or sluggish.
Better Posture & Strength – Without a soft mattress allowing our bodies to sink into unnatural positions, we feel stronger and more aligned.
Less Pain – My husband, who had a microdiscectomy and struggled with constant back pain, has experienced incredible improvement and newfound strength.
Why Does Sleeping on the Floor Work?
Modern beds are designed for comfort, but they don’t always support natural posture. Our ancestors slept on firm surfaces, which helped maintain spinal alignment, engaged core muscles, and prevented unnecessary pressure on joints. Sleeping on a hard surface:
Encourages better spinal alignment
Reduces pressure points and pain
Improves circulation
Helps the body naturally adjust to a more neutral sleeping position
How to Transition to Floor Sleeping
If you’re thinking about trying this, here are some tips:
Start Gradually – Try napping on the floor before committing to overnight sleep.
Use a Thin Layer – We sleep on a carpeted floor with a blanket and comforter but no additional padding. This provides slight cushioning while still keeping things firm.
Keep a Pillow (or Not) – We still use pillows for neck support, but some people prefer going without.
Give It Time – The first few nights may feel different, but your body will adjust. Bone bruises will be felt, but just know you are getting stronger!
Listen to Your Body – If needed, modify your setup slightly to find what works best for you.
Common Misconceptions
“The floor is too hard to sleep on.” – It may feel different at first, but most people find that their bodies adjust and actually prefer it.
“It will make my back hurt.” – Many report the opposite! Without a sagging mattress, the spine remains properly aligned.
“It’s not hygienic.” – Keeping a clean sleeping area is key, just like with any other bed.
Final Thoughts
This simple change has transformed our sleep, our health, and even our daily energy levels. If you’ve been struggling with sleep or chronic pain, consider giving it a try. You might just find that the floor is the best bed you’ve ever had.
