Children Initiative

Today, something truly special happened. Two little children came knocking on my door—couldn’t have been more than six years old, somewhere in the four to six range. With bright eyes and tiny voices, they asked if they could sweep off my porch and clean my windows for four dollars. Their determination was impossible to resist, so we obliged, and they got to work.

They took their little jobs seriously, moving things around to reach into the creases, carefully wiping the windows, making sure they left no spot untouched. I peeped through the window, watching their teamwork unfold. There was no playfulness, no distractions—just two little souls completely focused on their task.

When they finished, they packed up their gear—brooms, spray bottles, cloths—all neatly stored into a little wagon. Then, as if they had been doing this forever, they pulled out two mini water bottles, stood there together to drink. It was such a simple act, but something about it struck me deeply. There was no rush, no need for words—just the silent, shared satisfaction of a job well done.

Then, the little boy reached into the little girl’s pocket. At first, I wondered what he was doing, but then I saw it—the quick moment of confirmation, the way he checked to make sure their hard-earned cash was still there. He looked up at her and smiled, and in that moment, I saw something rare—trust, security, a sense of shared purpose.

They finished their water, screwed the cap shut, and walked off together, wagon in tow, onto whatever adventure came next.

It was one of the most heartfelt things I’ve witnessed in a long time. In their small act of work, I saw resilience, partnership, and the pure joy of simplicity. A reminder that there is something incredibly beautiful in taking initiative, working together, and celebrating even the smallest of victories.

Maybe we can all learn something from them.
